When to stop playing freerolls?

Posted on August 22, 2009 by Rick Mortensen

A lot of people participate in poker tournaments for free. Each day, there are thousands of players that enroll in freerolls at various poker rooms. Freerolls are the best way to practice your poker skills these days. However, there are also a lot of disadvantages of playing freerolls. After all, you don't have to pay to participate, so you won't really care whether you win or lose.

When you've taken place in a few freerolls, and you succeed in staying in the tournament for an hour or so, it's time to stop playing the free tournaments. Because even if you succeed in playing 4 to 5 hours straight and enter the top 10, you still only win a small amount. Usually it's an amount less than $50. In the long run, this is a waste of time.

The moment has come to play tournaments where you have to pay money to get in. Even $1 or $2 tournaments are a good place to start. There's even a better chance of achieving good results here, compared to playing freerolls. People will not go "all-in" so fast, making the chance of a bad beat smaller.

So, you should wonder if you want to keep playing freerolls to win a small amount of money, or spend your precious time and energy in certain tournaments that offer you the chance to win a considerably larger amount. The choice is yours!
