Boost for poker in the Ukraine
Posted on October 09, 2009 by CasinoBazar
A surprise move by the Ukranian government to outlaw all the country's casinos until new regulations can be introduced is expected to result in a rapid expansion of poker there.
The ban came into effect in May. But casino owners, who have had to pay € 150,000 for gaming licenses, are now seeking to replace their slot machines, roulette and blackjack with poker tables. The reason is that poker is exempt from the ban as the game is legally classified as a sport.
A spokesman for the Ukranian Poker Federation said: "We believe that "sport poker" will have tremendous growth. In one week we were approached by the owners of over 30 casinos who want to convert their sites to poker rooms but do not have the necessary expertise".
