Baccarat
The purpose of this game is to predict which of the two hands (the player or the banker) will get the closest to 9 points. The following bets can be placed in Punto Banco (or Baccarat): tie, dealer wins, player wins.
Points
The cards are counted as follows:
-
jacks, queens, kings and tens: 0 points
-
an ace: 1 point
-
cards 2 through 9 have their respective values
It's impossible to get more than 9 points. If the total value of cards of a player (or banker) would equal 10 or more, 10 is deducted from the total sum of points.
Example:
0 + 8 = 8 points
3 + 0 + 9 = 12 - 10 = 2 points
Natural
Because the purpose of the game is to get as close as possible to 9 points, a score of 8 or 9 on the first two cards is extremely beneficial. A hand like that is therefore called a 'natural', and when one of both hands is a natural, both hands are required to fold.
The game
Baccarat is played with a single deck of cards, consisting of 52 cards. Both the player and the banker receive two cards, which are shown to everyone. If one of both hands is a natural (equals a score of 8 or 9) that hand automatically wins. If both hands are natural, the highest score wins. If the score is the same (they both have 8 or 9) it's a tie (egalité). If the player and the banker both do not have a natural, it's the player's turn. The player folds when the score is 6 or 7. If the score is less than 6, the player draws a new card.
So, to summarize, this scheme shows the way it goes:
